that explains the geometric build of it, but not the waterfall, which is the real point of it, with this type of thing i think its more fun just to let it be a cool picture and let our imaginations run wild =)
The solution is that the drawing is in isometric perspective instead of linear perspective. The fact that there is no vanishing point means that there is no actual "depth" in the drawing. Things on different levels can interact with eachother because of this. Another artist who exploited this idea around the same time was Oscar Reutersvärd. His art is mostly geometric but still very fascinating.
I don't understand why people think this "explains" the waterball illusion. Sure thats goody goody in all, IF the water didn't exist it would be fine. But the waterfall is coming out of mid air. It is the water coming from nowhere, meaning that the "top" of it is actually right where the waterfall is. Make a more realistic render plz. Oh yeah, you can't, because its impossible. There is in no way this is possible. Enless you can of course make a wirethin, metalsturdy pump of water? I doubt it.
