Hey I just want to say that you guys did an excellent job on creating Meline, from the ambition to do it to getting it done- and what a beautiful piece it ended up being.
It was a great idea keeping the story simple, and it shows that you did put a lot of effort into it. I wanted to ask: What render software did you use, or was it just mental ray? And how long did it take for the longest frame to render?
All the best,
S P

I've read on your cgsociety blog that the frames renderd in 3 minutes! that's fast on a laptop for that quality.. When I render a tree like that it takes 20 minutes! That tree in the trailer does that cast and receive shadows or are you doing a special trick, it looks amazing and great job on the Totoro feel! U guys are truly an inspiration!

Thanks UtubeDiode! :)
Yes, 3 minutes. I used a lot of compositing to help speed up the rendering and most of all, every objects were modeled by having in mind were and how far it would be from the camera) The tree looks like it requires a lot of poly, but it doesn't. It a mixture between polymodeling, good texturing (by Virginie) and proper lighting to highlight the key elements of the tree :)
It was essential to think every model like that, otherwise the laptop would crash! :)
