A video of my cat, Taz, doing a few tricks she knows. Sit, Touch, and Beg.

In case you're curious, "Touch" means she should touch her nose to the little green ball at the end of the pointer. This is what's known as "target training"--by teaching the cat to follow a specific object, you can use it to lure her into position for other tricks. For example, if you wanted to teach a cat to hop up onto a chair, you could place the target on the chair, and give the command "hop", and the cat would know to follow the target.

  • Wow, this is impressive; I mean, training a fox is one thing, but I've heard legends about how difficult it is to train cats.

  • @MythicFox

It's really not as hard as it's made out to be. Training the cat is very similar to training the fox, actually.

A dog will do a trick because it loves you and wants you to be happy. A cat or a fox does the trick because it wants the treat. It's not that they don't love you or they're not smart, it's just that the motivation is completely different.

  • I should get a clicker sometime.

  • @EleniRaine

Good advice! I'll have to try it out. I always give Gizmo treats by hand, but for some reason it hadn't occurred to me to do that with Taz or the other cats.

  • @EleniRaine -cough- *giving the TREAT not trick XD

  • Awesome training sessions, tho can I mention one thing? I've found that giving the trick directly is better than placing on the floor. Placing on the floor can lead to scavenging for food left on the ground, rather than paying attention to your hand.

But of course if it works for you then it doesn't matter :p

I adore all your animals, Gizmo being my fave <3

  • thats really cool!

  • I didn't realize Taz was trained this well. Good job.

  • Fair enough, I'll take your word for it.
