This is the Kaman K-MAX helicopter which uses two intermeshing rotors. It's pretty incredible. It also uses a servo flap controlled rotor system. Instead of the rotor blades angle of attack being changed by twisting the blade on a hinge near the blade root, flaps on each blade are moved to change the angle of attack, similar to the way a fixed wing aircraft is controlled. This is more efficient than moving the whole blade.

Here's an article on servo flap rotors if you're interested:

  • USMC in Afghanistan is testing a pilotless drone version for cargo delivery, Tests began Dec 17, 2011. They've flown 20 transport missions delivering nearly 18 tons of cargo.

  • Certainly a very cool machine! Crazy design, but seems very very stable (well, I am sure the pilot had a lot to do with it too ;) )
