There are many factors that can affect the accuracy of rifles. A dirty barrel is certainly one of the common causes. The barrel on my gun is made by Lothar Walther. LW makes barrels for many rifles, as well as airgun companies, including FX and Air Arms. My gun's barrel really bites into the pellet. This may be part of the reason the gun has such good accuracy, but this also creates a side effect of a fouling of the barrel. It only takes a patch or two to restore accuracy. In most cases, I do not use any solvent - I just use dry patches. If that doesn't remedy the problem, I'll use a few drops of Ultrabore or Googone to remove stubborn lead. If I only use dry patches, I do not need to perform the ritualistic 30-50 shots to "re-lead" barrel and restore the original point of impact.

It goes without saying that every gun/barrel is different. Mine likes a patch fairly often. Other guys can go thousands of pellets between cleanings. This is why I avoided stating how often one should clean. That said, enjoy. :)

  • hey ted will ballistol damage the seals and o rings of the gun if i use it to clean the barrel?

  • @Rolandmarccolavizza No - Ballistol is no corrosive to o-rings.

  • hi ted.if the barrel is oily how will you clean your barrel?will you put any solvent?

  • @nathoi Yes - I use solvent. Ballistol is my favorite. But, I have also used UltraBore and even GooGone with good success.

  • Hi Ted, I just read a very long post, more like article from Eduard about R3 on Russian forum, he does admit that previously they did not pay much attention to the polish inside barrel and it was more noticeable on some batches then the others, but with new improved barrels (polished inside), he said the cleaning went down from couple hundred shots to 1500-2000 and dirtiness of the barrel no longer has such big impact on shot grouping.

  • @dimaprok Yes - I have spoken to Ed about that same feature. Basically any guns with serial numbers 2400 and later have the "new" LW barrel. My gun is serial 2339. So, my Matador is v 2.0, not 2.5. And yet, after many many trials of different cleaning agent, I have recently discovered a product that significantly improves this issue. I now do not have to clean my barrel nearly as often. Coming soon...... :)

  • Hi Ted,

I learned that I don't have to clean my Marauder and BSA so very often...which is great because I have to take the scopes off when I do and get it shot in again afterwards :-)

Very nice...I learned a lot from this video and I have noticed that I have to clean every 500 - 600pellets or so

    grtz

  • best thing to remove lead, is pure copper chore boy wrapped around a bore brush.

  • gamo viper?

  • That is a damn good 100 yd group. lots of hold, too. What's your zero?

  • just watched this one and cleaned out my barrel since my groups were not close at all, it was FILTHY ... also read an article saying for spring piston air rifles (like i have) that you should hold lightly and let the gun recoil how it needs to, i've been holding it like my dad showed me to hold a shotgun/rifle tight to my shoulder ... i guess all thats out the window today when i try it out again

  • hitting a milk jug even at 100 yards is good for an airgun, because at that point pellet tumbles and has lost almost all of it energy, and air restistance takes over. the riffling spin in pellet fails due to low velocity. different kinds of pellets i usually clean barrel quick to give the next type of pellet a fair chance, and riffle is clamped in a immovable possition.

  • um... how do you usally clean your barrel.. cause my gun isnt shooting accurate now.. please respond!

  • "short and to the left", sorry, but that just made me laugh out loud for ages :)))))

  • What pellets do you use for that accuracy?

  • So Googone doesn't have petroleum products in it that'll ruin seals?
