*****
Nicoles POV
"Mom! How could you?!"
"Nicole, its for your own good." She scolded me.
I was so shocked I couldn't even talk. I just stared at her with my mouth gaping. She had promised she wouldn't do this again. Ever.
"Mom, I told you! I don't want friends, I dont need friends."
"This is not a fr-" I cut her off.
"Or companions, or buddies, or a boyfriend. Whatever you want to call it!"
"This guy doesn't have to be any of those! I'm just worried about you, Nicole. And I want someone to be here, to keep you company if you want it, while I'm gone. I can't abandon the Junior League, you know that. And I don't like leaving you here by yourself and you're a little less hollow, when I don't make you come with me."
She had me there. It was true, I was always numb now. But it was a part of my life, something I got used to. But Mom was always trying to get me out of that. And I wasn't quite as spaced when I was home and with my writing as I was out and about with her.
But the memories of the last person she hired, hit me.
"Not again, Mom!"
"Nicole, that girl was a jerk anyways! You cant base everything by her!"
She was right, to a certain extent. She was only using us for her money. She had only agreed to stay with me, if Mom housed her, fed her and clothed her. Plus paid her for staying with me. But she had a charm abut her that Mom had fallen for, so when she finally saw through it, she was fired. That happened a year ago.
"Nicole, please just meet him. You dont have to talk to him, or see him or anything. He'll be in our studio from 9 every morning till I get home."
"Wait. Our studio?"
"Yes. He's a very talented artist but, he lacks the tools. I thought I'd help him out and you at the same time." Her face lit up slightly as she said this. She was pleased with herself for killing two birds with one stone and she loved art so much. It was the one thing that still made her happy these days, besides drowning herself with Junior League.
I couldn't burst her bubble. I wasn't aware of people's feelings very much anymore, but I tried hard not to hurt Mom on purpose. I narrowed my eyes at her and let her win this for now.
"Fine. I'll say hi, then he goes into the studio and I stay here." I crossed my arms over my almost-none-existing chest. She let out a breath and clapped her hands together once.
"Oh, Im so happy! At least I won't worry about you know so much."
I rolled my eyes at her, but kept my mouth shut. I wasn't a child, but I understood. I worried about her being alone sometimes too. But it was something that we both dealt with now, it was our life. The next morning, just like every other morning, I woke up automatically at 8:30. I showered, plucked a shirt and a pair of pants our of my drawer without really looking at them and trudged downstairs to get my coffee.
Mom was already there, sipping her coffee and reading a magazine about 'women being true women' or something like that. I nodded my good morning and poured a cup. She smiled widely.
"Good morning, Dear!" She was really excited about this guy coming over. I just gave her my best fake smile back.
Just like every morning, I downed my cup, grabbed a croissant and slid towards the back door. I would always walk around our garden twice, letting the caffeine kick in and thinking. Just thinking.
Coming up with new ideas for my writing, reliving some memories, trying to forget some. And also, just like any other time, I touched one particular flower that was on the far side of the fenced in area and recited,
"What may be beautiful
And what seems to
Be on your side,
Can take away all
That is meaningful."
"That was beautiful."
I tensed, my hand frozen on the purple Morning Glory. That was a man's voice. One I didn't recognize. I whipped around to confront my intruder.
There, in the doorway of the garden, stood a boy. A very good-looking boy. He had black hair, dark skin, darkly intense eyes. He was wearing lose jeans, but not hanging-off-your-butt lose. His black button-up shirt hugged tight to his chest and arms. My anger dissipated, replaced by something. A feeling I hadn't felt in so long, that I couldn't remember what it was called. It was something similar to my numbness, but it felt good. This was so new and shocking and I didn't know how to deal with it.
Going against everything my mom has ever told me, I didn't say anything to the boy and just brushed right passed him, running to my room.
