Listen for Life ( http://www.listenforlife.org ) presents: Midiyanto is a master of the Javanese form of gamelan. A gamelan is a classical Indonesian music ensemble found among the Indonesian islands of Java, Madura, Bali, and Lombok. The instruments are built in many different ways, out of materials which include bamboo and bronze. Gamelan music often accompanies dance and shadow-puppet-theater plays called wayangs. The word "gamelan" comes from the Javanese word gamel, meaning "to strike or handle." See also Midiyanto #1 on this channel.
Travels with Music is a series of profiles of master musicians from many traditions, created by Listen for Life to raise awareness and promote cross-cultural connection.
