In Sierra Leone, one in eight women risk dying during pregnancy or childbirth. This is one of the highest maternal death rates in the world.
Irene Khan's visit to Sierra Leone marks the start of Amnesty International's action against maternal mortality in the country. A "campaign caravan" will tour Sierra Leone over the coming weeks, providing information and fueling debate on the issue of maternal health.
oh my God, this is heart wrenching , wish I could help, even to educate these sisters, but distance poses a problem, one day you never can tell I may come to assist...

jaylo858: many of these women have no way of preventing pregnancies; they cant afford education, have no access to family planning/birth control/abortion. young girls are often raped or used by older men in exchange for small trinkets or money given to the family. when they become pregnant, they are often denied any aid from these men or her family & the burden falls on the girl. what exactly would you propose if not a program that addresses these issues? try not to be so ignorant. its a shame.

Why do those women keep getting pregnant and having babies, knowing they are poor and can't take care of them. It's a shame.

This is just aweful. Something needs to be done. I literally have tears in my eyes watching this.

Something has to be done to protect these women in Africa , but also to cut down on the number of unwanted pregnancies to start with . It is a problem even in the USA to get decent child birth treatment if you are poor . This video is very sad . Unfortunately we all have to help individually because in the USA , we give no help or foreign aid to Africa out of our tax dollars . If you don't believe it google vulture loans , we are the only major nation that honors them .

Unfortunately baby delivery is barbaric in the USA to this day . The very fact that OBGYN have women lie down to deliver babies is beyond stupid . They are fighting gravity . Water births , birthing chairs , even standing up is a better option . Then they grasp the babies head and pull , unecessary and dangerous . Most babies then have neck allignment issues , so much so , that htere are chiropractors who specialize in treating these injuries . It is actually safer to have the baby at home .
