In this video I tried to provide my version of how to overblow the harmonica. I think it might really help as it seems to me that I found the secret behind overblowing.

I am using an A harp...

Let me know if this video helped.... :-)

  • YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!! I TRIED TO DO IT FOR MONTHS WITHOUT EVEN GETTING CLOSE ... AT EXATLY 3:22 WHILE WATCHING YOUR VIDEO FOR THE FIRST TIME I GOT IT ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT!!! Sorry bout the caps but I'm excited :) It still sounds horrible but I got the basic idea. Thank you so much!!!!

  • @Bluefinger Great man I am very happy for you... there are two parts for learning to produce a good sound and they are your harp and getting to be very precise on the exact air pressure you should apply...The first one is mostly changing the gappings which should fit your style of playing (the more experience you have - the more you can play good on different settings)...The second part is incorporating it into your music, coming to the overblow from different notes and different attacks...

  • haha something concrete atleast.. Awesome video man! i never thought about controlling the air flux, it would always be a tongue thing for me.. I already got the higher notes overblows but still working on lower ones..

    haha tongue slip at 6:48

By the way is "overdrawing" playing in 3rd postion draw? or like bending higher notes?

    Regards- Yann

  • @BusTopLoner Thanks... Overdrawing is very similar to overblowing but while inhaling... The tricky part about overdrawing is the gapping of the draw reed which needs to be very very tight and that there is a very specific of air pressure... If you can make the "hissing" sound while inhaling your on the right track... The physics behind the "hissing" sound is to create a low pressure of air relating to the out side air this will choke the normal reed and will vibrate the other read...

  • it worked!!! I played my first overblow thanks to this video, and I tried a lot of other instructions before. now, one week later, i'm using overblow.com for further info and progression, and now i can play a clean 6 overblow.

  • @surrealIdeal I am very happy to hear...

  • awesome video! but i have a question: do i need to modify my harmonica in order to overblow or can it be played on any harmonica? cos from what i have searched, many say that to overblow one needs to modify his harmonica

  • good "street" explanation. the tongue redirects the airflow towards roof of mouth instead of directly into the harmonica.

  • @trackerbab Please do... I will be happy to hear if the method helped... :-)

  • I just watched your video, sounds easy, going to try it and will report back.
