Cutting straight sided male splines with CNC vertical milling machine and CNC 4th-axis attachment. Shaft is 4340 steel, cutter is a braze-on carbide flycutting tool. Shaft is for Torsen T-1 limited slip differential for Northwestern University's Formula SAE race car.

  • Great way of doing it. I love seeing the different approaches to machining.

  • Nice. I may even have to go 100% manual by using my rotory table. It would be helpful if you could answer the following questions. Thanks.

    1) What kind of insert are you using in the fly-cutter?

    2) What rpm on the mill?

    3) Do you know the type (01, 02, etc) of steel you're cutting?
