The Isle of Wight once boasted 54 miles of railway, most of which was closed between 1952 and 1966. However its unique atmosphere has been perfectly preserved by the largely volunteer-run Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which began operating trains in 1971.
Featured Locomotive is the A1X (TERRIER) CLASS 0-6-0T No W8 'FRESHWATER.
A member of the famous 'Terrier' class, designed by William Stroudley. Built in 1876 at the Brighton works of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway she was originally numbered 46, carried the name 'Newington' and was based at Battersea in South London. In 1903 she was purchased by the London and South Western Railway to operate on the Lyme Regis branch line. In 1913 she was hired by the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway and is believed to have arrived on the Isle of Wight on 25 June in company of seven carriages.
Recorded on the 19th July 2006 at the Isle of Wight, England.
The trip takes you from Wootton to Havenstreet and back again to Wootton.
My Father worked on the I.O.W Railway in the 1930's, based at Rhyde St. Johns, he lived at Wooton for a while then moved to Haven Street. He often got a ride to and from work on the footplate of Freshwater and the other engines that worked this line as well as travelling all over the system in the course of his work. He had many interesting and entertaining tales of his time on the railway.A very nice video, were he still alive he would have loved to have seen this. Well done.

Great video, nicely done and interesting to watch. Good shots of the switches and branch lines. Been on the Watercress Line but not this one on the I.O.W.
Keep up the good work.
