Since our Landrover Discovery V8i motor burned to death in November 2007, the engine was reconed, facilitated by the Landrover Workshop in Nelspruit. We had it back in December in it drove properly again. We only drove it in the city and in a national park where you are not aloud to drive fast anyway. This weekend we were on our way to Swaziland and as soon as we started moving uphill the Landrover started boiling...
We cooled down, loaded new water and drove carefully (read: slowly) to our destination in Swaziland. INspecting the car showed air bubbels in the water tank when getting warm. We have now delivered at the Landrover Workshop in Nelspruit to test where the problem is.

  • Hi

I am sorry, I cannot answer your question. The motor was dead and we brought it to a workshop in SA. The workshop reconstructed the motor but the same problem keep coming up. After 3 reconstructions of the motor, almost a year later they put in a new motor and the problem was gone. But I have no idea what they did or what was the root cause. They hadn't either.... solution: new motor.

  • the reason is probably slipped sleeve the first time it overheated. if you ignore it and just replace the headgasket, the problem will reappear soon. its common on some land rovers, the key is to not let it overheat in the first place, or if it does, stop driving immediately and get it towed to a shop.

  • Hi friends, My motor had same problem a year ago. Historically this problem occour a lot of times with ancient own.

well, in my problem, repeat two times with motor head damaged by overheat. I solve changing the viscous unit (link the motor to radiator fam) never more again the water boyling.

other items in need observed also: termostatic valve, head joint, etc

  • probably a warped block or head. The tolerances are very slim.

  • Bleed the Radiator and Check your Thermostat bru

  • @qhdld, it could be a defective thermostat

  • I 'm having the same problem as you and I have a freelander 2004, did you fix it? if so can you tell me how?

  • I had a Discovery with a similar problem. Turned out to be a valley gasket, rusted radiator, leaking water pump and a couple of other bits and pieces. Glad to hear things have worked out for you in the end - I simply purchased a much newer Discovery instead of repairing the old one.

  • If you didn't have a blown headgasket before this happend.
