The mental illnesses that would commonly apply here are bi-polar, and cluster-B personality disorders like narcissistic, borderline, and histrionic. They are impossible; self-centered, belligerent, manipulative assholes. People who make you feel you're "walking on eggshells." Then when you get in an argument with them their perception is totally insane - they'll throw something at you then immediately claim you abuse them, that sort of thing - and by the end you feel you're losing your mind.
