Nightly Amplified Noise in University of Oklahoma Library

This video was made in the University of Oklahoma library 30 minutes before closing on the evening of October 31, 2008.

This recorded loud announcement was added in the fall of 2008. Prior to that there had been one short sound of a bell 30 minutes before closing.

I wasn't sure when the recorded loud announcement would start, so part of it is missing at the beginning. You can hear the trail end of the first announcement.

Here is the sequence, which is heard three times:

"Attention. The library will be closing in 30 minutes. Attention. The library will be closing in 30 minutes."

Many OU students would like to have a quiet campus. Here is a 2006 article in the Oklahoma Daily about students complaining about the cell phone nuisance in the library. Cell phone violators have been there since the late 90s:

I am wondering why this is such a hot-button issue. The library remains as quiet as possible throughout its hours, this is merely a final warning. How is that detrimental to the overall atmosphere of the library?

You don't have a clue. You don't understand that quiet libraries have been in civilization for more than 2000 years. Within the last decade jerks within the OU library have been blasting their cell phone ringers, blasting noise from their ipod earphones, and eating food while crunching on ice and crackling the cellophane of their Doritos bags. If that doesn't offend you, then you never learned to study in quiet, since continuing noise from electronic devices has always been in your life.

Libraries? They're called "Media Centers" today! They're part playground, sports bar, musicians jamming, video arcade, you name it! Books? Stacks are passe. We need to be lively! I once asked a psychiatrist about noise in libraries and he didn't get it???? I feel I'm on the wrong planet!!!!

Good question. I see you attend Booker T Washington. Are you in Tulsa? Are you or any of your friends planning to attend OU? If so, I encourage you to write to some OU officials, and also the OU newspaper, and ask about the noisy library. There is also plenty of noise from cell phone conversations and loud earphones in the library. Under David Boren, OU has become very expensive while deteriorating into a funhouse atmosphere. Send me a message and I'll have some suggestions and more information.
