  • worth it?

  • @TownPiligan

Worth it? Good question. I've looked at that mountain my entire life. To finally get to the top, and to look back down meant a lot to me, that and facing my fear of doing it. I'm glad I didn't wait until I was sixty. Doing it at fifty was tough enough. Though if one my my kids wants to do it with me, I guess I would have to get in climbing shape and do it again.

  • @terrylovepresents i climbed kilimanjaro with my dad last summer and it nearly killed him (nearly killed me too but he can never know that haha) and he was 53 last year and we are planning on doing another (but smaller) mountain, something in the US and this is one of the candidates.

  • He did great for 53! This mountain would be doable too, it helped me to get in some hikes at elevation in the weeks before. Around here, there are a lot of hikes like that to choose from. Leg extensions are good for when you are coming down. You may also want to consider Mt Adams. It may be more like Kilimanjaro. It's 12,281 feet and has less glacier then Rainier.

  • If you leave the parking lot at 8:00 AM, a quick trip up and down would get you back to the parking lot at 5:00 PM the next day.

Some opt for two nights, which increases your chance for success. Just getting up to 10'000 feet the first time is pretty hard on the brain. That nauseous feeling passes if you sleep overnight. Some people have a hard time going to to 14,411 too quckly; younger people have a harder time with it then older people, a tip I got from someone in the medical field.

  • @DarkAutumnNight , I did the climb with a church group from Snohomish. The guy sliding down at the end of the video has been a hiking buddy since boy scouts. If you don't have a group, you might want to check with RMI Guides

  • @terrylovepresents How deep is the crater?

    Can you camp in it?

  • @AccessDenied55 You go up and over the lip of the crater, and then you walk around inside the crater.

  • @terrylovepresents Can you get right up to the top like at the tip?

    Im a Midwest person

Ive been to the mountain states, SCARY!

  • my dad has climbed it 6 times and im going with him next year

  • @terrylovepresents wow congrats on scaling rainier i remember back when i drove over 13 hours just to see it

  • @poopman1618 Yes, but seems like you need some experience for the fastest climbers are not the fittest. If you have the altitude fitness, different from general fitness you can get it done by starting before dawn. Old posting but I felt inclined to share some insight.

  • @mikefromspace Melt the snow in your cooking pot then filter the water. Pain in the arse but you will keep your teeth.

  • Worth it? To do it once, hell yes. Twice...? Maybe not. Lived in Seattle my entire life. Friend suggested we climb and I agreed. Climbed through RMI (amazing professionals, recommended). I talked to people who had summited and saw pictures of people reaching the top in t-shirts. That was not my exp. Climbed early Sept., winds gusting @ 60mph, departure temp at Muir was 17f w/out wind chill. All of my water froze, even wrapped in my GD parka. COLD, but the sunrise was 100% worth it..
