Our country Greece has the longest coastline of every other state in Europe
But it is one of the few countries in the world which doesn't have Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
EEZ is the seazone out to 200 nautical miles from the coast and the state which posses it has exclusive rights upon exploitation of natural resources in it
EEZ is protected internationally for each state which has coasts by the United Nations Law of the Sea (UNLOSC of 1982)
Greece ratified UNLOSC at 1995
Cyprus at 1988 and EU at 1998
One member nation of UN which didn't ratify UNLOSC yet is Turkey
Turkey as a candidate member of EU must ratify UNLOSC but she doesn't
Furthermore Turkey has claimed its EEZ in Black Sea and southeast Mediterranean
Some other states in the same region which claimed their EEZ are Cyprus and Libya
But let's see some maps in order to understand better
As we see Aegean belongs to Greece for exploitation
Turkey stands legally exposed because of its act to claim its EEZ in Black Sea and southeast Mediterranean
Because of this fact she can be pressed internationally to ratify UNLOSC
Turkey's "casus belli" against Greece on the other hand regards only territorial waters of 12 nautical miles and it has nothing to do with Greece's EEZ
Because Greece didn't claim its EEZ until now
Libya included the Greek island of Gavdos in its EEZ some years ago
The dispute was solved via the diplomatic route but the nature of this incident shows how dangerous it is for one country to avoid claims of its EEZ
In addition Cyprus has closed deals with mining companies in order to exploit petrol under its EEZ
Greece on the other side still search for loans instead of activate herself in the same field
Direct creation of a new political party with exclusive priority to claim the Greek EEZ now
