While the words, translated into English, are good, the sad fact is that the Russian people have never really been free under communism. Only under a Republican form of government can people be truly free. When "government" tells you what sort of work you must do for a living, THAT is not real freedom: it's a form of slavery.

In the USA, we decide for ourselves what we will do for work, how we will worship, and how we will freely express our opinions of the government. Can you do the same?

The lyrics about conquest and defeating invaders referred specifically to their victory over Nazi Germany. The Allies were able to win World War II because the Soviets had bled Hitler's war machine dry on the eastern front -- the D-Day invasion would have been impossible if the truce between Hitler and Stalin had remained unbroken. Not that I'm praising Stalin, he was every bit as monstrous as Hitler, but the Russians had good reason to feel proud in 1945 -- and damned good taste in music.
