"While still a child I often amused myself with a schoolboy's mischievous pranks, and my public never failed to fall into my trap. For example, I played one and the same piece now as a composition by Beethoven, now as a composition by Czerny, and now as my own. On the day when I presented it as my own work, I received the most encouraging applause ('That isn't bad at all for his age!'). On the day when I performed it under Czerny's name, they hardly listened to me. When I performed it with Beethoven's authority, then at long last I had a sure way of obtaining bravos from the whole audience."

Franz Liszt (a student of Czerny's who himself was a Beethoven pupil) wrote the above in a letter to George Sand. And it is probably a trick that would work today, just as well. Carl Czerny wrote this serenade in 1827 for Clarinet, Horn, Violoncello and Piano. Naturally the piano takes a lot of space but all the instruments get to present themselves. An adadgio introduction leads into a brilliant set of variations. Then a slow movement and a finale 'con fuoco'. Claudius Tanski, piano. Dieter Klöcker on the clarinet, Jan Schroeder on the horn and Martin Menking on the violoncello.

  • Wow. This is pure music, none of that modern rubbish.

  • The opening (about 1-4 bars i think) remind me to the opening of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor).

  • @CH3CH2OCH2CH3net the most of his exercises are very melodic too, many pianists don't see that, and just play his etudes as technical practices only.. but there are lovely melodies in it.

  • It's really too bad Czerny is remembered only for his technical exercises. The guy had unusual gift for melodic writing, and we see it in pieces like his Sonatas for piano and chamber music such as this. Unfortunately, we never hear any of this played today, and pieces like this really deserve to be in the standard repertoire.

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • BUT...,I'd like to dissent just a little.I think this piece would've been even more charming if it had been scored as a quintet with a Terz-Guitar added to the ensemble which is why Moscheles and others included one for such material.

  • Dear Joyce,You're so right. This is an amazing piece! Furthermore...what is really amazing and amazingly ridiculous is to play chamber pieces by Beethoven,Mozart, and Brahms over and over while excluding something like this. This piece is exceedingly well scored with very entertaining thematic material.

  • This is amazing! My favorite four instruments combined. Only the clarinet can be such an elegant yet mischievous mistress.
