How close are we to a cure for Alzheimer' disease (AD)? Recent clinical trials have revealed that immunotherapy disrupts toxic deposits of amyloid protein that build up in the brains of AD patients. Unfortunately, successful disruption of amyloid deposits did not have an equal impact on dementia. Scientists are evaluating the data and their ideas as to how AD destroys the brain and how best to treat it.

A cure for AD is not imminent, making prevention efforts vital now and for the foreseeable future.

  • There is a nice paper (Soscia et al, 2010 PloS ONE) showing that amyloid-beta has similarities with antimicrobial peptides family, and also, it has antimicrobial proprieties. Could be amyloid-beta a friend of innate imune response which is "helping" to eliminate some unknown infection in AD brain? I think this paradigm shifting really interesting, lets see what happens :) Bye from Portugal.

Thanks for your comment. I agree, the possibility that amyloid-beta acts in several beneficial capacities is quite important. It could turn out that eliminating it completely might have some unanticipated adverse events such as allowing reasonably well controlled infections free run in the CNS. No telling what will ultimately be found here.

  • Thank you Dr. Kokjohn. You are carrying out truly worthwhile research.

Thank you for watching and your kind words. For the record, I am one member of a team and our group is one of many worldwide trying to comprehend AD and control or eradicate it. I wish the news was better.

  • Good watch keep up the good work.

Thank you for watching and commenting. We are getting ready to go the International Congress on AD in a few weeks where we will present data on a group of subjects known as the 'oldest old' who harbor amyloid pathology but never became demented despite living to advanced ages. We hope that their biochemistry might shed light on how things can go wrong in AD.

  • Vitamin B Complex and Essential Fatty Acids apparently reverse Alzheimers.

  • When a person knows that AD runs in the family, they need to look at all things in their diet: alcohol, caffeine, exposure to aluminum, aspartame and they especially need to pay attention to allergies and for women, getting enough calcium and adding soy, stop drinking cow's milk. If there is a reaction which is similar to any allergen in common with the AD patient, do without it, not worth the risk.

Be happy, do things to stimulate the mind, the visual centers, and challenge your mind daily.
