Zulema - A Mother Cries [TSOB]

Biography:

Zulema was a pioneer of sorts in that she was a '70s black R&B singer who wrote much of her own material, and was able to assume some of her own production chores. The records themselves were average forerunners of urban contemporary music, occasionally reaching the lower parts of the R&B charts, Zulema's vocals betraying a strong Aretha Franklin influence.

Born Zulema Cusseaux in Tampa, FL, she was a member of the Lovelles in the late '60s and early '70s. A Van McCoy produced Lovelles single ("So Much Love") became a Top 20 R&B hit in 1971, but Zulema went solo shortly afterwards, recording a couple of albums for Sussex. She assumed her highest profile with a series of LPs for RCA in the mid-'70s, reaching the middle of the R&B charts in 1975 with "Wanna Be Where You Are." Her recording career ended after an album for LeJoint in the late '70s.

  • great post!

  • Zulema is my prima. She hit some hard times in Ybor City a few years back, but she's still hangin' in there!!!

  • Does anybody know where she is now? I was a vary close friend and would love to find her.

    Lady P

  • What an incredibly moving song.. Pity Zulema was so underrated.

  • I have all the RCA & both Sussex LPs/CD..this is not on none of those. This track was supposed to have been recorded in 1981 at TSOP before the Zalmac LP, but the production does not sound like 1981. Could be from the Sugarbaby,Sugarbaby ST...nonetheless a very talented and underappreciate sister.

  • The bio on the right isn't quite correct, she did go on to record an album as half of the duo "Zalmac" in the 80s. Check her wikipedia entry for more info. And isn't this solo track from around that time too? I can't really make out the label, but it looks like 1981 to me. It certainly isn't on any of the RCA albums I have, nor the Sussex one.

Still, thanks for posting this. I did not know the song, and I am a huge friend! Any info on what song she did on the Sugarbaby, Sugarbaby soundtrack?

  • 5 stars from the Ace :o)
