This is a home made test run of working the iron handpress making a blind impression for make ready. This press is a relief or letterpress printing press circa 1900.
This demonstrates the basic operation of the press printing any document. The inking step is left out because it is a run for an impression without ink into thin paper to see if the packing needs to be adjusted. In the day, two men would be operating, ideally, and that is why I am walking back and forth, which i would do if I were inking from the right side, the usual side for inking. One man would ink and one would place paper on the tympan. The tympan and frisket assembly is what folds over the bed. It holds the paper above the type until the bar is pulled.
