Direct drive motor acts like a generator at a dam. I found this out by accident when I was making sure there were no socks hiding in the drum. Spun it and the lights came on. Scared me the first time it happened.

Yup. You can use the machine's electric motor as a generator. Basically, generators and motors are pretty much the same thing. Neat demo.
