Didn't understand why move the cattle instead of taking the hay to them? You did a great job moving them to the hay by making a trail to follow and the cows made it easier for the dog to come behind. You are an assect to the ranch and to the promoting of usig dogs in any cattle operation. Those dogs pay for their keep.

( continued).....Putting the hay out early allowed me to keep the catte fed even if the tractor couldn't get to them. Rotating the cattle to the hay allowed me to control how much they wasted, in a time when hay reserves were precious.

Mr. Griggs, according to the weather forecasts at the time, we were expecting from 4-24 inches of snow. So before the storm, I put out 2-3 days of hay in each of several pastures. That way I could move the cattle to fresh hay as needed, but they couldn't waste it as easily as if I put 10 days of hay in one field. As it turned out, the snow was too deep for the tractor to pull the hay wagon to the cattle.
