No, oldgravely, this system did not have any secondary air inlet near the top. It all came in through the triangular air holes at the bottom of the outer barrel. It's a true retort....the majority of the wood is inside an inner chamber. The fire never enters that inner chamber. It just heats the inner chamber from the outside. When pyrolysis begins in the inner chamber the smoke exits the bottom and, under the right conditions, mixes with the inlet air there and adds to the outer combustion.

No, just a few small coals from the burning wood. Yes, we're trying to develop a burner that works well for those gasses.....they don't burn as well as methane or propane, for example.
