In late 1932, Roy Fox fell ill with pleurisy and had to recupperate at a sanitorium in Switzerland. Whilst he was away Lew Stone, the pianist, took over as leader. The band became more famous whilst Fox was away, and when he returned, he wanted a pay rise. This was refused, so after a court wrangle, Fox left and formed another band at the Cafe Anglais. The only band member to leave and join Roy Fox, was Sid Buckman.
On 24th October 1932, the Lew Stone Band was officially formed. They still played at the Monseigneur and broadcast for the BBC. Al Bowlly's popularity grew stronger and stronger, cutting hit after hit. Here's an example of a 78 from his very first recording session with Lew Stone's Monseigneur Band, ''Why Waste Your Tears?'' recorded, 31st October, 1932 for Decca. The picture shows a cartoonist's impression of Lew Stone and his Monseigneur Band, with Al at the microphone.
In the next part, find out how Al couldn't resist a tempting offer to move to the USA.
I love this number.
