Christopher Payne, M.Arch. (Christopher Payne Photography, Brooklyn, New York) visited and photographed 70 state mental hospitals in 30 states from 2002-2008. This presentation displayed and described these photographs and included a brief history of care for the mentally disabled in the United States. Specific buildings, such as the Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride building, were featured along with narratives depicting healing via building and places which are removed from society, safe, and self sustaining. Included in this discussion are remarks on "moral treatment," segregation, and deinstitutionalization of residents. Richard L. Merkel, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. (Associate Professor of Psychiatric Medicine, University of Virginia) provided comments on theories and models of care for persons with mental disorders. Dr. Merkel also addressed stigma, societal concerns, genetics, longer life spans, and globalization.
hello UNCDoctor: thanks for the feedback and happy you enjoyed the lecture! since speakers often show slide images that they do not own or do not want released, we've been advised by UVa's copyright lawyer not to film any of the slides. sorry if our viewers miss out, but we've got to balance copyright concerns with our desire to get the lecture content out to the public. thanks again for watching!
