You absolutely need a lawyer to negotiate a severance package. In many instances the severance package can be made better with the assistance of a lawyer. At a bare minimum, you should understand what the package means and what all the language of the package means. And you should go over your employment history with a lawyer as it relates to the severance agreement. And in the event that there is a problem with any of the payouts under the agreement, you have already established a relationship with a lawyer who can help you work with the company to make sure that all payments are made under the agreement.
