Reflective spheres and a small metal pointer are attached to a sterile
housing, in which the iPod, covered by a sterile drape itself, is contained. An infrared camera system -- located about 2m away from the OR table -- can detect the position of the iPod via the reflective spheres.
The surgeon holds the iPod with the tip of the pointer at the location on the bone where the artificial joint should end up being placed. The joint anatomy is registered, digitized, the data goes to the camera system -- the calculations are sent back to the iPod within milliseconds. All this works wirelessly through a
WiFi connection.
