Lys and Tra Mi are two of our very first 'HIPPY Kids' now tackling Year 12, and talking about the difference HIPPY has made in their lives. HIPPY is a two year, home based parenting and early childhood education and enrichment program that gives parents the skills to be their child's first teacher. Managed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence in Australia, the program builds the capacities of parents to prepare their child for school, and also offers HIPPY tutors a supportive pathway to employment and community leadership.
Since 2008 the Australian Government's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has funded 50 HIPPY sites, providing invaluable early learning support and encouragement to around 3500 disadvantaged families across Australia in partnerships with agencies such as Barnados, UnitingCare, Anglicare, Novitas, St Lukes and Ngala. Fantastic, real results.
Lovely to see money well spent. Through capacity building these programs make generational changes. A positive impact that is probably immeasurable. Well done, team Brotherhood!!!
