Floculina is right. the "title" of mestre is irrelevant when it comes to a status of rank. It is an indication of a life's work. Cabello is a living, breathing depiction of a "Mestre". Famous mestres continue to refer to him as Mestre Cabello. He does NOT call himself that. I know him very well. He's an amazing individual and a prime example in my eyes of what truly makes a mestre of our wonderful art form.

I think that some people offer him this honorific because of the work he does and the knowledge he has to offer. He doesn't call himself that.

i dont think cabello was promoted to Mestre...i haven't heard about this anywhere...

Mestre!!?? Who made him a mestre? I don't think so....
Mestre is what they call him in Bahia— João Grande doesn't make people "mestre", as I've heard, but rather expects "a comunidade" to give the title. And it's been given... He was "Mestre Cabello" all over when I was in Itacaré and Ilhéus last year.
