On December 13, 2009, Charles from Austin, Texas called in and described himself as a "recovering atheist." Now he calls back for another long discussion that ends rather abruptly when he describes himself as a solipsist. This heated discussion went on for more than twenty minutes, but this edited video clip is considerably shorter.

The previous discussion (about "inane Philistinism") from episode #635 can be watched here:

This is a clip from The Atheist Experience #656 of May 9, 2010, with Matt Dillahunty and Jeff Dee. (Topic: Viewer calls.) This entire episode can be watched on Blip.tv and Ustream.tv:

  • This guys problem is that he wont listen, he called with what he wanted to say and would not let anyone say anything unless you kind of forced it.

  • The presenters have for once encountered someone articulate and able to argue intelligently. Their only response is to ridicule and talk over him. They pounced on his claim to be a solipsist without letting him finish. We're all solipsists to a degree - it's a normal human state of mind - I don't think he meant them to take him so literally. We'll never know because they cut him off. I've seen them allow complete morons to go on and on. They couldn't handle this guy.

  • The presenters interrupted the caller much more than the caller interrupted the presenters.

  • why do americans always interupt each other?

  • "You're a solipsist?!" In stereo! *lol*

  • @studiocire Well said.

  • Wow, that guy was a shithead.

And I now think, based on the synchrony in Matt's and Jeff's responses, that there's an AE Prime Directive that states "When thou meetest a solipsist, hang thine phone up on his ass."

  • Priceless. Gotta love solipsism: If you (I) really are (am) a solipsist, why would you (I) ever try to convince others (myself) of the validity of the theory. It would be much easier to just imagine some guy calling in to argue with two atheists on a youtube channel ;)

  • Solipsists should be required to wear big huge signs saying, "WARNING! SOLIPSIST!" so that human beings can avoid feeding their imaginations.

  • Gentlemen, the solution is simple. Take care of yourself, and the people you care about. And they will take care of theirs.
