Great white pelicans are found across Africa, in eastern Europe and in some parts of Asia.
However, their numbers have declined dramatically.
They are easily recognised because of the large pouch on their lower beaks.
They are very good at catching fish in shallow water, which does not make them popular with local fishermen.
In some areas, they are the subject of myths and legends but they are also considered a delicacy in some regions.
