then realized the tapes, he left them with Jay. Knowing Jay, he probably didn't burn them. Slenderman then targets Jay, as he cannot get to Alex. Slenderman gains power the more you know about him. This is why Masky didn't want Jay to have the tapes in the safe, Slenderman wrote the note what gave the combination. Hoping to stop him from learning more, he physically assaulted Jay, hoping to make him stop searching(He could only do that because he hadn't quite gained most of Slendermans ability.)

My theory:
Alex is Masky.
Masky is Totheark
When Masky tells jay that he will lead him "to the ark", he means the safe place. The safe place is a place safe from Slenderman, just like in the bible, the ARK was a safe place from the flood.
Slenderman is like a disease, infecting others if he has been around them for so long. This is why Masky distorts video, and seems to be able to teleport. Masky is trying to save Jay. Alex fled the state, as he knew what was happening. He left the state.
