Just back from a bit of tennis with the kids (soccer game just before that). I got some new strings on - yep finally got around to it. :-)
This is a tune by Howard Morgen - a piece he wrote in honor of Hy White.
I'm laying it down fast - one take only for my Seagull buddy - Hey Bob!

  • Great job for one take! I studied with Howie back in the late 70's when he was originally in Bayside. Took the Q-12. Lucky break for me, amazing teacher and a nice guy. Turned me on to Lenny Breau, Ted Greene, Howard Roberts, Joe Pass, all of them. Hats off. There's lots of his books around.

  • what a memory recall! I forgot all about Bayside. I didn't study with him until Grace Court in Great Neck. Before that a local guy in Queeens who studied with Howie. That guy told me "you need to go directly to Howard now ". I put the guitar down a few times for long periods in life, but it has pretty much been there since I was about 14. I am thankful to have that common thread in my life; which is growing more intense in recent years. It feels good. I wish us all a very long playing life.

  • man, that's fabulous! do you recommend reading music? Is any of Howard Morgen's stuff in tab form?

Also: what kind of guitar is that you have?

    real sweet - ddanze

  • reading can be very helpful, it's according to what you want to accomplish. More importantly is knowing where the names of all the notes are across the fretboard (if you have to limit your study). If Morgan only printed in standard he would lose a lot of customers. It's been that way for years with most guitar study stuff - unless it's a study meant for reading only. Guitar is a Seagull Folk. It's not plugged in. I'm going direct to camera mic - just a cheap Kodak.

  • Hey, do you know Howard or studied under him? I was playing that song pretty good myself not so long ago, with Howard playing backing chords. Haven't tried playing in fourteen or so months, and now forgotten. Anyway, you play it well. I'm gonna have to pull out the songbook and get that one back.

  • Yes I did study with him privately many years ago when he worked out of his home in Great Neck, LI, NY. I think I have two other howie arangments up on youtube.. Stompin' at the savoy and starway to the stairs. I have a "rare" book of his with some great pop tune before his pubilsiher at the time lost the rigts and he had to remove them in newer editions

  • Yean, amen to that. I was with a guy named Erni Arti, a really sweet, older jazz guy who came to my house, and had played on the Arthur Godfrey radio show. After about a year he sent me to Howie, I have posted an arrangement of Yesterday that is based on an arrangement Howie showed me. I also took some lessons from Joe Monk, a great local player who was on MIddle Neck Road at the time. Thanks for this post. Howie did well, and deserves it.

  • I think Howard Morgen is from Long Island New York...I think, but not sure that he use to teach Paul Simon.
