This place is called Doi Thao (Turtle Mountain); properly called Talae Sap Doi Thaow it is 125 KM. or an hour and a half drive south of Chiangmai near the town of Hot. It is part of the H.R.H. Bhumibol reservoir. At the Doi Thao landing there are many large restaurant barges and small bamboo huts that they will tow out for inexpensive dining, drinking and karaoke services.
From Doi Thaow it is possible to travel by boat more than 120 KM. to the H.R.H. Bhumibol Dam. Along this route there are caves, hermitages, a temple, several chedis and more sights as well.
I am a boat builder who lives in Chiangmai and have been boating there for more than twenty years so I can vouch for it as a place of interest. It is still one of the least known tourist spots to foreigners and most of the people who do go there never leave the karaoke rafts. The fishermen and fisherwomen live in houseboats along the reservoir and fish with many different types of nets, small fish traps and large traps as big as a Volkswagen Beetle. Goats and cattle are raised along the banks and are transported by barge. It is a nice place to visit and spend the day, night or explore even further.
