11 December 2009 walk through of the earthship being build in the state of Florida. Construction by Bryan Roberts of Eco-Tech Construction. Please note I made an error stating 6 domes are to be constructed - it is in fact one on each corner for a total of 4.

The construction site is being used as a hands-on experiential educational center for all those interested in sustainable construction. Bryan is also testing a brand new building technique which will be introduced early part of next year that will put zero energy living within reach of even the most modest budgets.

  • Can an earthship be the size of a mansion with several floors, a cinema room, spa, sauna etc?

btw if no lines go to the home, then is there a way to get a telephone line or internet connection?

  • @Bak3dB3an It can obviously be build to whatever size within reason but it certainly is not the most efficient way to do so; multi story construction is definitely not worth it. we have actually been working on a modernized version of these off grid construction principles that is way faster to build. You can always get satellite / wireless phone/internet so that's not an issue. Got a particular project in mind?

  • Where in Fla is this house being constructed? Anywhere near central Fla, I'd love to check it out

  • @titan8or it is located in Myakka City FL, just north of Sarasota - pretty central in the state :-). We have a page on meetup dot com under Earthship Florida I recommend you join. We are in the process of forming a cooperative to turn the property into an educational technology park.

  • It this finished yet?? what a project. good for y ou..

  • @josephdupont thanks Joseph! no it is not finished yet; the main reason being the project has been on hold for about 8 months now. we were originally contracted by a private client to build it as a residence and this person has since run into health issues. we are in the process of putting together a partnership with multiple people & businesses to purchase the property, finish the build & launch the businesses. (see collaborative biz launch videos below; others on our channel).

  • This will be good for when the zombie apocalypse happens and you have all these tires around.....

  • @MessIahmake I think the only drawback is the time and labor involved in this. I'd bet every small town has at least one big tire pile somewhere, not to mention how many can be found in a city. Any auto shop that sells tires has to do something with the tires they replace, and many have a field or backlot somewhere that is their dumping ground.

  • @MessIahmake there's plenty of used tires out there - but you are correct; it is not a building method to market towards the "average Joe". VERY labor intensive. We've actually developed our own building method that incorporates the earthen thermal mass effect but in a much quicker way to build and conventional looking fashion. The foundation is concrete BTW.

  • how well do you think it would do in a earthquake?
