BROSSARD, Quebec. Carey "Jesus" Price deliberately conjured up an image of Patrick Roys fateful last stand in Montreal as the Canadiens 100th season drew to a disappointing end. Price, Montreals sophomore goalie, raised his arms over his head in response to a sarcastic cheer from the Bell Centre crowd of 21,273 after he stopped a harmless dump-in during the Canadiens season-ending 4-1 loss to Boston on Wednesday night.

Montreal was swept in four straight by the top-seeded Bruins in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal, and Prices gesture left the hockey-mad city divided, with many fans and pundits criticizing him for being brash while general manager and coach Bob Gainey defended him for standing up for himself. Well, to be honest, I used that particular gesture to remind the people that booing doesnt always help, Price said at a press conference at the teams suburban practice facility Thursday.

Roy made the same gesture 14 years earlier when he responded in kind to mock cheers in what would prove to be his final game with Montreal. The future Hall of Famer had twice been voted the playoff MVP while leading the Canadiens to a pair of Stanley Cup wins, first as a rookie in 1986, and again in 1993. Despite his superstar stature, Roy had the Montreal Forum crowd turn on him during a humiliating 11-1 loss to Detroit on Dec. 2, 1995, in which he allowed the first nine goals before he was pulled in the second period.

Roy forced a trade and went on to win two more Stanley Cups with Colorado, adding a record third Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP with the Avalanche in 2001. Thats the biggest thing that comes into my mind when I think of somebody getting booed out of the rink, Price said. It doesnt always help but I guess I could have gone in another direction. Widely considered to have star potential, Price made it clear that he wants to remain with the team.

At 21 years old, I think hes doing pretty darn well, Gainey said.

  • il est trop jeune anyway..............

  • Theres no doubt Price hasnt been all he can be, but to suggest his career path is in genuine peril based on two playoff performances before his 22nd birthday seems extreme. Roberto Luongo, the best goalie in this years playoffs, was 28 before he dealt with the burden of post-season play. Thats an extended grace period Price will never know."

  • we have the BEST you mean the other team would KILL to have either Price or Halak, you know nothing dude. Talkshit the rest of the team if you want to talk about it so badly but you have nothing to say about the goalies.... you sound stupid honestly. The Goalies we have are the only reasons why were gonna make the playoffs

  • If Price is Jesus then I'm God and God sez that Jesus couldn't stop a beachball with a deflector shield from the Enterprise. Good job Gainey is gone or Halak would be playing at the U of Turdsville for a 14 year old player from Hoboken. Gainey destroyed our team with a bunch of geezers, lame-o's and no talents. And take the vunderkid Price with ya. Maybe he can get a job setting up you golf balls at Bullshit Park.

  • no matter p-e

  • The Montréal fans do not hate the english players, they just prefer the french

  • montreal fans are prejudice idiots not all of them but the home based fans from quebec most of them don't like the enlgish players on the team, remember they gave koivu a hard time cuz he can't speak french and was made captain; bottom line is montreal fans need to stop being selfish bigots and just let their team play and support them whatever they do, fans can ruin a team.

  • im a habs fan too... but i gotta say montrealers are probably the dumbest hockey fans.. and booing the team cuz they supposedly "promised" (cuz we all know sports teams promise stuff...)a cup is a bit unrealistic.

  • i agree

  • CAREY CAREY CAREY!!!!!sorry bud guess the Price just wasnt right o well theres always next year im very dissapointed in seeing my fellow habs boo him after that save hope they know its there fault we lost the best DAMN goalie in Monreals history
