"Edelweiss" was composed with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II in 1959 for the musical production of "The Sound Of Music". This would be the final song composed by arguably the greatest songwriting team in Broadway musical history as Oscar Hammerstein would die not long after the film version of this song used in this video was released. There have been many misconceptions about this song leading many to believe that it is an old Austrian folk song or even the Austrian National Anthem and it is neither. This was a totally original song composed by Rodgers & Hammerstein using an Austrian flower (edelweiss) as a symbol of the Austria that existed prior to the Nazi annexation of this country. The song was wonderfully sung by both Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews in the film version of "The Sound Of Music".

That was beautiful. What a special time for film making. We will never see stories made like that in our life time.
