This is the third and final part of a video clip of me and a friend of mine doing some casting in his garage. In this last part I pour the rest of the crucible of metal out into an ingot mold to make ingots and I give a quick description of the furnace.
This was in the middle of January in Ohio in 2009. It was about 10 degrees out side and about 30-40 inside the garage when we started.
Yes, in this video series we are pouring aluminum. While that particular furnace cannot handle higher temperatures, it is relatively easy to cast bronze, brass, copper, and iron using propane. To do steel requires an oxygen source. Look up Bessemer Conversion for details on that... Though, from what I've been told, that can be very dangerous if done improperly.
Two things of note. Not all refractories are the same, and iron is doable with propane, but requires a very finely tuned burner.
