The easiest way to measure a creek's head is to use the pipe method. Submerge a piece of rigid pipe in the stream so that water flows through the pipe. Then lift the downstream end until the water stops flowing out. Measure the vertical distance between the end of the pipe and the ground and you have the change in elevation (or head) between the upstream and downstream ends of the pipe. Watch our other video about assessing the flow of a creek, or read more on our website at http://www.waldeneffect.org
Not sure where you're located at, but we're in Western NC, and starting to research microhydro systems. I ask out of curiosity, have you ever thought of using a GPS to assess sites?
