I had this idea for a spatula for using on the campfire. We had a sunny, but bitter cold day today. Usually, I would do a completely hand carved item by a fire. Time was an issue of sorts today, and without a fire, I would have had to wear gloves. And, for some reason, I will do whatever it takes to avoid them. Probably, it has to do with sensing the materials and tools. I notice in the videos my hands seem to be collecting as much info as my eyes. Anyway, we brought in a piece of wood that I had in mind. Split it out of the billet with a hand hewing axe, then refined it further with a carving axe. The spatula took on a more usable shape with More knife and then a Lie Nielson scraper. I was going to use a larger blade for scraping, but since I was indoors... The outcome is a probably too dry, but viable candidate to be called a spatula. I have some mulberry cut that will be used in some forthcoming videos on making rough bushcraft utensils.

  • @usframe how about one day doing a longer video on your overall collection of 'bushcraft' tools so that we can get a bigger picture view on the sort of equipment thats needed for the stuff that you do :D

like the videos though, keep'em coming :)

  • @arnoldlayne111 man, that is a tough one, but we'll sure see what we can do. Overall, a good sharp hatchet and a simple Mora knife can do tons of stuff. Thanks for watching.

  • That ax is mean looking. The bend is functional and gives it character. Like it.

  • @Cr0cket20 yes, right-handed, different bevels on edge also, thanks for watching!

  • Neat job big guy. Leaving the natural upsweep on the handle was a great idea. That little homemade knife looks sort of like an oyster knife.

    Jesus is coming soon.
