Self proclaimed Beggin Ass Valentine Bolger plies his trade outside the Guinness Storehouse and laments the passing of industrial Dublin.
-----------
A series of 12 crafted short films, each focuses on a different character within Dublins Liberties community. It has been described as the documentary film equivalent of a portrait gallery.

The Liberties captures the character and unique humour of the people who live there. The documentary celebrates ordinary lives well lived in The Liberties - Tailor Eugene Fagan sews in a button for an 80 year old customer as they chat;  Meath Street butcher Declan Larkin carries quartered cattle into his shop at dawn; Flower Ladies, Phyllis Kavanagh and Mary Hand judge passers by on Meath St; Theyre not going to buy flowers, Theyre not going to buy flowers. Brenda Fricker polishes her Oscar at home, just off the Coombe and recounts the comment from friends; What are you doing living up there, Brenda, Youll be murdered, Youll be killed.

The film was shot, produced and directed by Shane Hogan and Tom Burke and edited by Tom Burke. Original music composition was by Gerry Horan. Audio post-production was by Kevin Breathnach at Avondale Studios. Titles were designed & produced by Lorcan Finnegan and Brunella Cocchiglia at Lovely Productions. The series of films was originally funded by the Arts Council under the Once-Off Project Award in 2008.

  • Love the whole series. Thanks for posting it. Made me nostalgic for Dublin. I lived there for a year in the late 70's while a visiting student at UCD. I lived just south of the Liberties near Harold's Cross.

  • @miceal22 Thank you for your comment. I am sure you would notice many changes in The Liberties since the 70's and yet many things that will have stayed the same.

That is part of what makes the area interesting. All the best.

  • Hey, I thank you for uploading this. It´s unbelievable, I were with a friend on holiday there and I´ve seen Valentine. We drove with him from the Guinness Store to St. Stephans Green. All people on the road have laughed... It was crazy but very funny...!

  • @xXHoffnungxX Sounds like fun. Valentine is still there most days. Most people who visit the Guinness Storehouse end up having some sort of interaction/transaction with him. Thanks for your comment.

  • Ireland unfortunatly has many people, men women and children who desperatly need money and are forced to beg. Im from Crumlin with my family from the Libertys and I can tell you that this man IS NOT POOR. He owns lots of land in Crumlin and is a multi-millionaire.This is fact. Where he is in this video is the outside the Guinness Store house, the biggest tourist (FOREGIN) attraction in Ireland and he gladly takes there hard earned money. He claims we have too many foreginers. What a hipocrit Bulger
