This is some video I took of Bonobos at the San Diego Zoo using my digital camera. I wish the quality of some of the clips had been better. I also wish I had take a lot more video, but it was early in the day and I didn't want to kill my battery.

  • gentle creatures? where the hell have you been chimps are violent killers .there entire lifestyle is centered around violence and death.your one of those clowns that live by i think it therefore it is get an education fool .

  • @59cva First of all, Bonobos and Chimps are different animals. Although they are related, they are very different. And while Chimps can be violent - even to the extent of killing and eating the babies of other chimps, they are not a violent animal.

  • What a terrible life in what is obviously a substandard environment for these intelligent, gentle creatures. They must be rescued and transferred to a refuge for chimps and bonobos asap.

Humans have no right to steal them and then breed them in captivity.

  • I agree with your basic point. However, having bonobos and other endangered animals in zoos serves the purpose of raising awareness and helping people understand why they are worth saving. Without zoos, most people wouldn't even know what a bonobo is, let alone care why they should be saved.

Furthermore, having a viable population in zoos helps to ensure the species survival when they are being killed in their natural environment.

  • Why don't we take them all from Africa and put them in some special giant forest in the states.

  • Rather than remove them from their native lands, we should find ways to create incentives for the locals to protect them.

  • @59cva bonobos are some of the most/more gentle primates out there... how can you demand someone else to "get an education" when you are grossly misstating facts? bonobos have a female dominated society which attributes to their lack of overt violence

  • If it were EVER appropriate for us to anthropmorphize another species, it would be with this species. I think it is quite silly to assume that bonobos living in zoos would rather be out in the wild fleeing from poachers, and watching their loved ones succumb to disease, parasites, and predators. If they were made to understand their choices, I think it very unlikely they would choose the jungle...at least at the present time. Do not think for a second that they are incapable of understanding.

  • @malkeh53 Would you rather live in a large enclosure, where you are given regular food, clean water, shelter, and occasional entertainment, or would you rather live in a neighborhood where you have to be very careful lest a group of people come in, shoot, and eat you and your children? Think about it.

If you've decided which one of those two scenarios you prefer, please give bonobos, who have an intelligence level that overlaps ours, the opportunity to enjoy being kept in captivity.

  • @jhamaker It would be more accurate to say that chimps are a highly aggressive animal, and that they engage in frequent violence. They even enjoy violent films, just as we do. (I'm not sure what the distinction is between an animal that frequently engages in violence, and a violent animal, however).

Bonobos, conversely, while they may engage in violence, and do fight occasionally, are far less aggressive than chimps (or we) are. Both chimps and Bonobos are Homonids, interestingly enough.

  • @59cva and now it's my turn to own you: HOW ABOUT YOU GET AN EDUCATION 'FOOOL', idiot..

@malkeh53 if that were to happen i.e. chimpanzees and bonobos in the same enclosure, the bonobos will literally be killed.

  • @59cva you're a fucking RETARD, you're the one who needs to get an education as I'm currently being taught Bonobo's vs Chimanzees in the first year of University and first semester, currently as I type this I'm going through the lecture and it states The 2 Main differences

Chimpanzees: Vicious fights between groups, frequently causing death by ambush

Bonobos: Peaceful, generally egilitarian and males will actually be close to their mothers throughout life

  • Didnt know that they were in captivity

  • i agree with you 100%. thanks for the upload. great vid!
