[Please read] Dramatic intensity unrivalled out West. One of the finest videos associated with this channel.

James Stewart was one of the most intense actors ever to portray a cowboy lead in movie Westerns. Director Anthony Mann, a particularly adroit "hydraulic engineer," knew how to make use of Stewart's "deep waters" for maximum dramatic impact. Together, they lent their fine talents to the five superlative Westerns featured (in brief clips) in this video.

Until creative contention spoiled their working relationship on the set of NIGHT PASSAGE(1957), Stewart and Mann flourished together. Additional team-ups included work on THUNDER BAY (1953), THE GLENN MILLER STORY (1953), and STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND (1955).

  • though why we are piling on Stewart Mann praises dont forget Mann Cooper in Man of the West wonderful film up there with these and The Furies has some great stuff too Mann was overall the best western director ever, as an ensemble his westerns as a group for me are better than Fords though My darling Clementine beats anything Mann ever did so you pays your money and takes your choice then Wash then Boetticher and only then Peckinpah and after that

    they're aint no more

  • He is the greatest western actor of all time. more people agree with that sentiment than you"d think. Its him, Henry Fonda second, then john Wayne and Eastwood.

  • He's always been my favourite actor .... yes, I preferred him to Wayne (my father would be appalled!).

Harvey, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, even as a cartoon in Fievel Goes West.

You don't get actors like that nowadays.

  • Stewart better than John Wayne? Well lets not get ridiculous now!! :-)

  • the falling out between mann and stewart occurred over Night Passage: mann did not want to direct it, and stewart took umbrage and that was it. Actually Night Passage is, in my opinion, a better western than Man from Laramie, many fine things in it, but for some reason a lot like Man, I don't. Its boring mostly.

  • another thing few ever notice about stewart: he cried more often than any actor in film, broke down and cried and it was so natural that few noticed. instances...its a wonderful life (noticed) naked spur (unnoticed) night passage (unnoticed)vertigo (unnoticed) and I wont go on but there are three others...yet look at how psychopathic he is in Vertigo and Win 73 with Duryea...a bloody genius

  • Stewart fell out very badly with Mann.

  • Great ensemble video, really got me into the Stewart-Mann Westerns. Best one? I'd say Winchester 73, simple plot, tremendous acting, action and directing make it a classic.

  • Jimmy Stewart was the greatest western movie actor ever. Yes, even greater than John Wayne. Thanks for posting this. This is the first time I've ever seen Anthony Mann. Great director.
