I found it really helpful how you explined that the weight is at the back of the fly, and the action of the legs is as it drops. Do you know if there are any non-lead materials that could be used (instead of lead)?

You can use a thread color to match the body or you can contrast as you see fit. I haven't noticed a difference in effectiveness. You could certainly weight this with a brass bead or tungsten bead behind the chennile and hold it in place with a thread dam.
