and ford allowed them to do this to there car?

oh, of course. you guys need to simulate some pretty complex stuff. using reality and computers to see the result is the best way to do things. if the reality matched a correct simulation, then everything is correct. the vercidt is difinitive. but in no circulstance are you to take the computer result over that of reality... unless the test in reality cannot be done to full appreciation of its goals
In short, its best to do both and be sure.

I agree, because I deal with Finite Element Analysis in my job, but this problem is much less complex than what we are expected to simulate.

A computer simulation is never going to be as difinitive as real life observation. There have been countless occasions where reality has defied computers. Computers are certianly a good tool, but its always going to be second best to testing things in reality.

looks like fun to hang off

That looks fun to do!

NASA is not meant to be "fun". They must have purpose. Indeed, I´m an engineer so I shall be employed. The ones who think are the ones who deserve the job.
Think about it.

yeah but computers are not nearly as fun to watch!! ;) And it keeps people employed; think about.

Smart!
i'd rather a crash test where the car
CRASHES!!! :P
