Rams edge Stingers 3-2
The Ryerson Rams men's hockey team climbed back into the Mid East Division race with a gutsy 3-2 victory over Concordia on Friday night at George Bell Arena.

The Rams came out desperate in the first, outshooting Concordia 19-10 while holding the puck in the Stinger end for most of the period. Their efforts were finally rewarded when a Brent Small (Pickering, Ont.) wrister beat Stinger goalie Sheldon Baerg (Burnaby, BC), giving the Rams a 1-0 lead after one.

Play opened up in the second, however, as momentum swung back and forth between teams. The Stingers got on the board when Jesse Goodsell (Ayers Cliff, QC) whacked home a loose rebound two minutes in to even things up. Alex Sharpe (Mt. Forest, Ont.) gave Ryerson a shot in the arm at the 12-minute mark, when he beat Baerg with a nice forehand-backhand move to put the Rams up 2-1. But the lead was short lived, as Brad Gager (Dorval, QC) finished off a 2-on-0 break just over a minute later to knot the game at deuces heading into the second intermission.

The third period was a tight-checking affair, as neither team looked willing to relinquish the lead. But strong board play allowed Ryerson to strike half way through the period, as Marcus Booth (Orillia, Ont.) walked off the side boards and backhanded a long shot past Baerg. From there, the Rams hung on to their 3-2 lead, being outshot 17-12 in the frame and surviving a last-minute penalty kill to claim the crucial two points.

Paul Gibson (St. Thomas, Ont.) was huge in the dying seconds for Ryerson, making several huge stops to preserve the one-goal victory. The Rams goalie made 38 saves to pick up his first win of the season. Baerg was equally strong for Concordia, turning aside 38 shots in taking the loss.

The win gives the Rams five points on the season, and pulls them within one point of third-place RMC in the Mid East. Ryerson (2-6-1) will remain home for a tough test Saturday afternoon, when they face fourth-ranked UQTR (10-1-0) at George Bell Arena. Concordia (5-4-1) will travel to Toronto (5-5-0) for the final match of their two-game Ontario road trip.
