In 1966-67 Terry Knight and the Pack were THE MOST CHERISHED REGIONAL ROCK GROUP in the American Midwest. The band showed its commitment to the region by recording in Cleveland and Philadelphia, touring from Illinois to Pennsylvania and everywhere in between, appearing regularly on Cleveland's UPBEAT television program, and embodying an image consistent with the changing social and economic forces of the rustbelt 1960s (just look at the photo on the back of their first album). As a result, the group was immensely popular in the area.

Although some of the Pack's best-known songs were covers of other artists' hits, I've chosen to highlight the group's original material here as a testament to Terry Knight's songwriting knack. Although often accused as a musical plagiarist, Knight was, in reality, just keenly aware of every pop-music movement, and he soaked up trends like a sponge. As a former disc jockey, Knight was well educated in American rock, the British Invasion, soul, rhythm 'n' blues, and ballads, and all of those influences come across in the Pack's records. As a songwriter, Knight was adept at crafting tunes that were simultaneously commercial, thoughtful, and expressive.

From the group's second album, REFLECTIONS, I've chosen to included one non-original song, Sloan/Barri's "This Precious Time," since the Pack's version is viewed by most as the definitive version rather than a "cover":

1) "Love, Love, Love, Love, Love"
2) "This Precious Time"
3) "Dirty Lady"

Terry Knight and the Pack were a talented group of guys, and it's a real shame that their music has never been released on CD.

  • Diggin' this acts RANGE...Blues, folk, psych and of course, rock. Cut 1 flashed' early The Mann Fred Mann Band, 2 reminded me of The Byrds' Chestnut Mare, n' 3 had me thinkin' of some later 60's Donovan. Myself being bred n' born in the midwest gives this act even more appreciation. I need some of their vinyl now!

  • Yeah -- like I've said, Terry Knight was a real sponge, and he was into just about every kind of music that was coming out in this period. The Pack's music really makes them the quintessential garage band in that they assimilated the entire scope of popular music and responded with their own covers, tributes, and original material.

  • I still have my Terry Knight albums from high school. I love his music. I agree, it's too bad these great songs were never put on CD (or iTunes, either.) THANKS for posting!

  • Actually they are on CD now. The Collector's Choice label put out a CD that includes TK&TP's first and second albums on one disc.

  • OH MY GOD!!!! I love this band so much, I never imagined they would be on youtube! Terry's voice gives me 1000000% chills! Oh thank you so much for this one I love it!!!

  • Glad you enjoyed it! I found both Pack albums when I was just a teenager, and ever since then I've thought their music was special. Since no record companies seem interested in putting their music out there, I figured I'd do it myself.

Per Wikipedia, both Mark Farner and Don Brewer (drummer) of GFR came from The Pack.

  • looking at the musician beginning at 2:41 on the right side of the back side sleve n' he looks a lot like the drummer from Grand Funk Railroad. Any connections?
