Hi all,

This short video was filmed over the course of a couple of days during my holiday.

It is shot on the well-known Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway which runs for 7 miles or so between the bustling seaside town of Paignton and the quiet yet beautiful riverside village of Kingswear. The railway also calls at Goodrington Sands (for beach, water park, go karts & amusements) and Churston (for the bus service to Brixham).

The railway is often 'put down' by enthusiasts as they are not a preserved railway, they are a working business. Opinions of the railway aren't improved by the fact that their locomotive's do not carry authentic liveries either. The liveries were designed by the company, although they do look very classy when in practise! The railway currently has 6 steam locomotive's, 3 of which are currently in service. These are two GWR 2-8-0 tanks ("Hercules" & "Goliath") and the only PDSR engine which carried a name in its working life...Manor Class 4-6-0 No7827 "Lydham Manor".

Although there is "bad feeling" about the PDSR, I think there shouldn't be. It is a very nice journey offering some of the best scenery from any UK preserved railway and offers daily steam in the season to boot. Though a business, the staff are friendly and the railway is well worth a ride if you're in the area! (There can't be much wrong with the line, most trains are almost full to the brim!).

During my visits, I saw trains at the following locations:-
*Saltern
*Goodrington Bank (x3)
*Sugarloaf Hill

I hope you enjoy the video and will maybe visit the PDSR one day.

Also, all of my shots were taken from 'legal' locations as the main Goodrington-Broadsands footpath clings the lineside of the PDSR for almost all of its length! Thanks for watching.

Enjoy!

  • hang on why is a working busyness a bad thing? i think its good for steam engines to do revenue earning service

  • it is good in my opinion but the common opinion isn't like mine lol

  • but how can they be a buisness when they have volenteres

  • They are a business. The company is called "Dart Rail". They have been for years. The staff are paid. There MAY be some volunteers but most of them are paid as they are a company not a charity. Cheers

  • Great video mate, looks like you had some bad weather but you made the most out of it, loved the final shot. Suprised they let 7827 loose with 9 in the rain, struggles with 7 on a dry day! I'm sure you'll like the WSR, 5*s

  • Cheers mate. Yeah I was surprised. 4277 did the Saturday alongside 7827 then it went back to single loco service and it was 7827 alone all week. I would of liked "Goliath" but its nice to see the Manor as most of the time the two tank's seem to do all the work nowadays! lol. I wouldn't mind seeing "Trojan" run just to say I had but I doubt they'll ever do that one as its for sale. Fingers crossed for "Warrior" though! lol. Cheers.

  • Well yeah shame about Trojan, hopefully someone will buy her soon and get her back running, I think if the P&D bought another powerful loco after her they would sell Warrior and have an all powerful line up, just for the record I've seen in this order 5239, 6435, 75014, 4555 and 4277 run on the P&D

  • ok thank for telling me no wonder the prices have gone up

  • It is true, it is not a very enthusiast friendly railway sadly.

Although, it has a new manager, and they're getting rid of that awful station at Paignton!

    Great vid

  • Warrior is my favorite. I talked to the P&D and there are no plans to sell her. They'll keep it for lighter traffic days, so she'll be taking over Ajax's job.

  • My favorite engine is Warrior 4555. I rode behind her in 06, and she is the most beautiful of the tank engines. She is down waiting her turn for an overhaul after Trojan 4588 is done with hers. I also hope the Brave Heart returns to steam soon.

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • great vid 5* i have notice a few moans with this railway i think the livery is excellent at the front but the back is wrong basicly its br lining with gwr paint and logo the only thing with this railway is that it puts a smile on my face that no other railway can do probaly because it was my first ever ride on a steam train
