The city of Kanazawa was fortunate to escape both earthquake and the re of war during 20th century. As a result, it remains a traditional urban form and town house type established during the Edo period, which is called Machiya. Adding to famous, well preserved Machiya, many name-less Machiya which had been renovated or rebuilt by the pressure of modernization were identfied. Transformation of the city appears among this variety of Machiya mutation.
